Types of Diamonds
If you’re shopping for diamonds, it is important to know what types of diamonds are out there.
Natural diamonds (also known as earth-created) are formed naturally under the high temperature and pressure conditions that exist about 100 miles beneath the earth’s surface. These are the highest valued diamonds when comparing equivalent grades.
Lab-grown diamonds (also known as man-made, lab-created, and synthetic) have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds, but are grown by man in a laboratory. Currently, prices for lab-created diamonds are roughly half the price of their natural counterpart.
Simulated diamonds (also known as imitation) are not actually diamonds. They have a similar colorless appearance but their chemical, physical, and optical properties are different. Sometimes these are man-made materials (CZ, moissanite, glass, etc.) while other times they may be natural gemstones (white topaz, sapphire, etc.). Being there are a variety of look-alikes available, price will vary greatly. However, these are typically quite inexpensive.
